I7453 Overlijdensbericht (obituary).
Minnie VanDis, 92, of Rock Valley passed from this earth on Monday, May 20, 2013, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley, IA
Minnie Bodewitz VanDis was born November 7, 1920, to Henry A. and Martena (Uithoven) Bodewitz, near Boyden, Iowa. She attended school in Boyden, IA, and Valley Springs, SD and grew up on the family farms near those areas. Minnie was united in marriage to Joe VanDis on September 26, 1938. They celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage before Joe passed away in 1997. Together, they farmed in the Valley Springs, SD area. She was a mother, farm wife, a foster parent, and in later years also worked at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. She moved to Rock Valley, IA, in 1998. Minnie was a member of Faith Reformed Church, Rock Valley, and prior to moving to Rock Valley, the Valley Springs (SD) Reformed Church.
Minnie enjoyed and loved attending auctions, flea markets, and rummage sales (she had a special liking for antique dishes and glassware), playing cards, fixing jigsaw puzzles, and reading. Her family remembers her as a good sport in playing cards and table games. She especially enjoyed taking her grandchildren on fishing excursions. Minnie always enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She taught her children to garden and can produce. She always welcomed guests for a meal, and her specialty for unexpected guests was her canned meatballs, a recipe she has passed down to her family members. Everyone seemed to enjoy that meal. Rhubarb and strawberries was also a staple dessert in the summer, and her Golden Chiffon Birthday Cake and oliebollen were a special treat. Minnie enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and traveling, especially an Alaskan cruise with family in her later years. Her legacy to her family is her Christian faith the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Willi and Andy Klumper (Artesia, CA), Tina and Syl Vugteveen (Valley Springs, SD), John and Anne VanDis (Custer, SD), and Harlan and Clare VanDis (Rock Valley, IA), 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jake (Sonia) Bodewitz (Sioux Falls), Ben (Alison) Bodewitz (Anchorage, AK), and Andrew (Gertie Ann) Bodewitz (Slayton, MN); and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Huenink (Steen, MN). Minnie also leaves her very special friend and caregiver, Shirleen Post.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe VanDis, a grandson, Tim VanDis, her parents, and sisters and brothers, Theda DenHerder, Clazina Franken, Henry Bodewitz, Marcus Bodewitz, and Esther Bloyed.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful caring servants from Hegg Home Health, Whispering Heights, and Hospice for their loving gentle care these last years and months.
